A unique provincial study
The Exprimer research project aims to describe the experiences of nurses in the public healthcare system using data collected from across the province.
The registration period to join the cohort of participants has ended. A big thank you to everyone taking part in this longitudinal research project!
- Licensed practical nurses who are OIIAQ members (including CEPIAs) OR
- Register nurses who are OIIQ members (including CEPIs and Nurses Practitioners)
+ A position in nursing between October 1 and November 30, 2024, within the Quebec public healthcare network (unionized or “unionizable but non-unionized”).st octobre et le 30 novembre 2024 (emploi syndiqué ou « syndicable non syndiqué »).
*** For each round of data collection, participants are asked whether they still have a position in nursing within the Quebec public healthcare network (unionized or “unionizable but not unionized”) and whether they worked during the previous month. Otherwise (e.g., retirement, leaving the healthcare network, promotion to a non-unionized position), the participant will no longer be eligible to take part in the next round of the study.
Participants are asked to fill out an online questionnaire every six months for three years.
- Fall 2024
- Spring 2025
- Fall 2025
- Spring 2026
- Fall 2026
- Spring 2027
It takes about 30 minutes to complete each questionnaire.
The research team is deeply grateful for the participants’ ongoing commitment. The participants are the heart of the Exprimer project. Ils(elles) sont le projet Exprimer.
Maintaining communication with our participants is essential.
Newsletters are sent out during these three years to keep people informed of the project's progress. Public webinars are also organized for the same purpose.
Our research topic?
your reality
The worldwide phenomenon of turnover and shortages of nursing staff has a clear impact on professional nursing practices and on the quality of care and services offered to the public. In Quebec, many nurses leave the Health and Social Services Network (RSSS) every year.
Faced with this trend and its consequences, the Exprimer research project aims to gain a better understanding of the main determinants of nurse retention and departures in Quebec’s public network. It is being carried out by a team of researchers working closely with a multi-sector advisory committee, made up of members with expertise in the nursing field.
The project tracks the progress of a cohort of nursing staff over a three-year period (with two online surveys per year). All unionized (or “union-eligible, non-unionized”) nursing staff in the RSSS were invited to participate, including CEPIAs, CEPIs, nursing assistants, registered nurses, clinical nurses, and specialized nurse practitioners.
The project will provide a picture of nurses’ workplace experiences from their own perspective. All data collected will be held in strict confidence. It may lead to recommendations to support informed action within the RSSS. Beyond the numbers, the project is intended as a vast opportunity to mobilize nurses in an exercise of collective reflection on the experience of employment within the public network, at local, regional and national levels.
